The Dunkin' Donuts in Cape St. Claire is handing out free doughnuts Friday with the purchase of a coffee.

It seems like there is a special day for just about everything these days and the doughnuts is no exception.

National Donut Day is Friday and in honor of their big day, doughnut shops across the nationβ€”including some in Anne Arundel Countyβ€”will be handing out free doughnuts to customers.

With many locations in the area, Dunkin' Donuts is on board with the holiday.

For a free doughnut,Β you'll need to purchase a medium or large beverage (hot or cold), a representative of the said.Β So, you might want to stop in for your free snack in the morning.

In Broadneck, Β is sure to be a popular spot for this year's National Donut Day. The chain has about 35 varieties of doughnuts, depending on the location and size of the store.

The holiday itself, alwaysΒ celebrated on the first Friday of June each year, was established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to honor women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.

The Salvation Army this year is teaming up with baking company Entenmann's to help celebrate National Donut Day; Entenmann's will donate proceeds from sales and offer customers a chance to win free doughnuts for a year, by entering a contest on its Facebook page. Entenmann's doughnuts can be found at area grocery stores.
