Welsh's Goal Lifts Broadneck Boys Over Meade, 1-0

Sophomore Henry Welsh redirects a late free kick for the game's lone goal, as the Broadneck boys win 1-0. The Lady Bruins scored five times in the second half as they coasted past Meade, 5-0.

Sometimes it takes a while, but theboys' soccer team (3-0) continues to find ways to win.

After struggling with the Meade High (2-1) defense for the game's first 69 minutes, sophomore Henry Welsh redirected a Luke Dellorso free kick to give the host Bruins the edge.

"I think we're playing pretty good soccer right now," Broadneck coach Sean Tettemer said.

Both sides entered the game undefeated in county play and tried to succeed with a possession-oriented style. Broadneck displayed glimpses of their desired brand of soccer. The Bruins looked like the better team at times, but the scoreboard reflected equal sides in the first half.

Each side mustered a few first-half chances, with an early strike by Meade's Victor Barr delivering a shot just wide of the near post as the Mustangs best chance to take a lead.

"I thought they ate us up in the first half," Tettemer said. "We did a better job in the second half of challenging. If we couldn't win [challenges], at least we were making it difficult on them."

After 69 minutes of play, the game saw its first goal. A foul by Meade set up a free kick for Broadneck. Two Bruins players ran over the ball before Dellorso struck a ball into the box, where Welsh managed to redirect the kick to the near post past goalie Jason Shears.

"We've used it a few times. We've had some success with it," Tettemer said about the free kick play. "We got the job done."

For Welsh, he was happy just to get a piece of the ball.

"It was a good ball," Welsh said. "I got a touch on it luckily. Anything to redirect the ball."

The Bruins nearly scored again in less than a minute. Dave Keen took off down the left side of the field, using a swift move to get inside the box. But his pass to the front of the goal was met by none of his teammates.

"Tonight, Broadneck was the better team," Meade coach Mike Banach said. "At the end of the day, they won the tough battles."

The Bruins will head to Arundel High on Thursday for a 7 p.m. match.

Lady Bruins Win, Erupt For Five Second-Half Goals Against Meade

The Broadneck girls' soccer team (3-0) dominated offensively during the first half of the home game against Meade High, but failed to reach the scoreboard.

Emily Lord, Summer Dean and Sammy Dean all saw their shots go wide of goal or into the hands of goalkeeper Cheyanne Novreski.

The second half was a different story for the Lady Bruins, as five goals poured in to what became a one-sided match.

"We just couldn't finish," Broadneck coach John Camm said. "[It was] one of those situations where you know once you get one, you know you're going to get a bunch more. It's just a matter of getting the first one."

A throw in to Sammy Dean was flicked backward to Erin Rose, the striker then broke the deadlock with a goal at the 22 minute, 22 second mark.

"I was in the right place in the right time," Rose said. "I was motivated to go out there and score."

A hand ball in the box by Meade's Brooke Coligan gave Sammy Dean a chance to convert a penalty kick, meaning suddenly after 57-plus minutes of scoreless soccer, Broadneck held a 2-0 lead.

Goals from Lord and Faelyn Casey meant 4-0 for the hosts.

Finally, a Rachel Maxwell cross found Bethany Pezza in front of the goal to give the Lady Bruins a 5-0 lead.

"They're all smart kids. We got it going in the second half," Camm said.

Broadneck will travel to Arundel High on Thursday hoping to display their scoring abilities yet again.
