Charlestown's Henri Carlton Earns National Nurse Administrator of the Year Award from NADONA

CATONSVILLE, MD—Henri Carlton, RN, BSN, DON, the Director of Nursing for Charlestown retirement community, earned the Nurse Administrator of the Year Award for 2011 from the National Association of Directors of Nursing Administration in Long Term Care (NADONA-LTC).

The award was presented to Ms. Carlton during the 2011 NADONA Annual Conference held in Orlando, Florida in July.  The Board of Directors for the Maryland Chapter of NADONA, along with staff from Charlestown, nominated Ms. Carlton for the recognition.

“Henri epitomizes what the best a director of nursing can be,” stated Jacqueline Vance, RN, CDONA, FACDONA, Executive Director of NADONA/LTC.  “We know that Henri is a true professional in long-term care with her participation and commitment to excellence.  She is not just an outstanding leader at Charlestown, but in the industry as well.  We could not think of another so deserving of this award.”

With Charlestown for ten years, Ms. Carlton also earned the Maryland Chapter’s Director of Nursing of the Year Award for 2011. She serves the skilled nursing neighborhood, Renaissance Gardens, and assisted living neighborhood, Renaissance Gardens Terrace, at Charlestown.

Ms. Carlton is highly involved in nursing education.  For five years, she has authored and taught the long term care curriculums for Beacon Institute on topics such as Resident Rights, Advance Directives and the role of the nurse, Root Cause Analysis Processes and Safe Lifting Initiatives.

Additionally, she has partnered with area nursing schools for geriatric education, including mentoring second-year nursing students on management and leadership skills.  She received recognition from Coppin State for NADONA’s leadership preceptor course from 2009-2011.

Ms. Carlton also earned the LifeSpan Network 2010 Service Award for chairing the QIS committee.  She is also involved with state government activities of quality improvement, partnering with Maryland’s Office of Health Care Quality (OHCQ) on processes for bulk medications for facilities.

She is an active participant in community service activities.  Her affiliation with the League for Disabilities at Camp Greentop, a special needs camp for people with disabilities, extends sixteen years.  The camp now has classes for both heartsaver and healthcare providers taught by the Department of Nursing team from Charlestown.

Ms. Carlton earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Maryland and a Masters of Administrative Science from Johns Hopkins University.
