🌱 CCBC Athletics Leader Dies At 94 + County Employee Vetting

  1. John D. "Jack" Manley, a beloved longtime member of the CCBC Catonsville community, passed away at age 94 in his Catonsville home after a battle with bladder cancer. Manley was the college's first administrator of health, physical education, recreation, and athletics director and served as a coach for multiple sports teams. He was also a pioneer for Title IX at CCBC, as he helped develop 22 intercollegiate sports and implement women's sports at the local, regional, and national levels. Plans are being made for a celebration-of-life gathering to be held in the spring. (Subscription: Baltimore Sun)
  2. Baltimore County is currently under scrutiny for its employee vetting practices after a Public Works employee with a criminal history allegedly used a stolen city vehicle to try to steal an ATM in Owings Mills. Kirk Parker Junior was convicted of armed robbery and firearm charges in 2014 and joined the County's Department of Public Works five years later. A report by the inspector general, nearly 100 County employees had criminal charges or financial issues, but some didn't have an official background check on file. According to County Executive Johnny Olszewski, he is working to address concerns and add more employees to take care of the backlog of background checks. (FOX Baltimore)
  3. The Catonsville Comets boys and girls varsity basketball teams are scheduled to face off in several home games this week as their 2022 season continues. First up are tonight's two back-to-back games against the Loch Raven High School Raiders. On Wednesday, the girls' team will play the Western Tech Wolverines, while the boys will play the Eastern Technical High School Mavericks on Friday.
