CCBC to host its first Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration

CCBC will host its first Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration at 12:15 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12. This virtual celebration is free and open to the public.

The event will acknowledge and honor Native American traditions and cultures and will include drumming, art, dance, speakers and a keynote address by CCBC Dean Emeritus Dr. Dennis Seymour, who is Eastern Band Cherokee.

The Indigenous Peoples Day event is a part of CCBC’s Community Book Connection, an interdisciplinary reading and cultural initiative. This year the CBC is focusing its studies on The Truth about Stories by Thomas King, and leading activities and events related to Native American and Indigenous histories, stories, culture and struggles.

“CCBC is proud to join many states, cities and colleges around the United States to recognize the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples Day,” said CCBC President Dr. Sandra Kurtinitis. “We want Native American people and communities to feel respected and supported, and we are excited to celebrate those who occupied these lands for millennia prior to European colonization.”
