CCBC Rededicates Soccer Field
The community college's soccer field named for Mildred and Joseph Murray.
Community College of Baltimore County Catonsville rededicated its soccer field, which had been named in honor of Joseph Murray, to include his wife, Mildred.
The field had been dedicated in 1974 to honor Joseph Murray, whoΒ CCBC President Sandra Kurtinitis described as one of theΒ original 1958 employees who helped shaped theΒ direction of what was then called Catonsville Community College.
MildredΒ MurrayΒ is a long-time supporter of CCBC and a pioneerΒ in women's athletics, according to Kurtinitis.
For 43 years MildredΒ MurrayΒ served in a variety of managerial athleticΒ capacities, eventually retiring as the coordinator of Physical EducationΒ and Interscholastic for Boys and Girls for Baltimore County.Β It wasΒ through her accomplishments that Baltimore County was at the forefrontΒ of implementing Title IX mandates, according to a statement released by the college.
MildredΒ MurrayΒ continued to supportΒ CCBC after her husband's death, according to the college. She partnered with Catonsville Community College and held theΒ first state championships in basketball, volleyball and field hockeyΒ which lasted for approximately 17 years.Β

At a ceremony on Sept. 27, the soccer field was renamed theΒ JosephΒ and MildredΒ MurrayΒ SoccerΒ Stadium.
"This is a real honor for me, and it was an honor for Joseph," Mildred Murray said at the ceremony. "He always felt connected to Catonsville."
