Instead of walking for a cure, you can now dance for a cure! It's a new approach.
Kaitlin Skirven, aged 22 years, local resident of Howard County has been inspired to organize this benefit dance concert in memory of her beloved father, Charles A Skirven Jr., who died on February 4, 2010 from melanoma cancer. All proceeds from this event will go to the Melanoma Research Foundation.
Nearly 12 months ago, Kaitlin contacted her local friends in dance and formed a group, Dancers United. The group is bound by their love of dance and also, most deeply, by their love for the friends and family members they have seen undergo cancer treatment. They want to help.
Kaitlin says: “People, especially young people, donʼt realize how dangerous and deadly melanoma cancer is. My Dad always said that when he got better, he would dedicate his life to helping educate people on melanoma. He didnʼt want anyone else to go through what he endured So I am doing this concert to honor his wish."
Many other local dance groups have generously offered rehearsal space and have joined ranks to participate in the concert. These include Studio Dans, Bfunk Dance Company, Ballet with Cindee Velle and Merge Dance Company.
Acclaimed choreographer, dancer and theatre artist, Dianne McIntyre, recently one of the dance icons honored in the Kennedy Center “5 Great Ladies of Modern Dance” is offering support to this event in honor of her friend, Charles Skirven.
