Four Great Books To Add to Your Family Library

Books that will inspire your family to play.

Someone once called me the woman of 1,000 ideas.

Actually, wait, no one's ever called me that. Once my husband commented on how many half-completed projects I had around the house. I think he said something like, "Why are there all these half-finished projects all over the house?"

Naturally, what I heard was, "Wow, you have a lot of really great ideas! Someone should pay you to write a book. Then we can quit our jobs and travel the world."

But alas, even self-proclaimed totally amazing idea generators such as myself—who haven't yet been asked to write a book, total oversight if you ask me—need a little inspiration from time to time.

Thankfully, there are other idea generators, with far superior writing skills, who have written books full of clever ideas, fun games, and things to make and do with the family. Here are few of my favorite books that I keep in the library (or in non fancy terms, a shelf in my office) for inspiration.

The Creative Family

This book, by beloved blogger Amanda Soule, is filled with projects and activities like making art mats and joy jars. She makes living in the wilds of Maine seem fun even to a city mouse like me.

Totally Irresponsible Science

This book containing 64 daring experiments for young scientists is chock full of goodness. In fact, during a recent play date, my 3rd grader and her friend couldn't put it down. They were making plans for their next get together when my daughter popped up her head and yelled, "Mom, do we have any mothballs?"

Cute Stuff

Here's one for those of you with a sewing machine. This craft book features achingly adorable things to make. It's perfect for young beginning sewers. I love the illustrations and projects so much that I can't even get angry when my things don't turn out looking like they do in the pictures. It's just too darn cute!

Great Parties for Kids

I can't remember where I first ran across this book. I think it was a European site or magazine. However it came to be, I am so happy I did. It is, hands down, the best kids party book ever. It's not over the top (well, okay, maybe a little) and it suggests you incorporate much of what you already have around the house. The pictures are downright charming and it features an incredible catalog of creative party themes—from space to gangsters and molls.

Now that I've shared what's in my library, I'd like to hear about yours. Do you have any favorite books that inspire your family to play, make or create?
