Living Well at Charlestown

Cheryl and Mark Wong were seeking a vibrant, social lifestyle in retirement, and they found exactly that at Charlestown.

As a lifelong New Yorker, Margaret Mahaney found herself exploring the unknown when she began researching senior living options near her family in Maryland.

That's why the welcoming, social atmosphere at Charlestown, an Erickson Senior Living community in Catonsville, Md., made all the difference.

"The friendliness here is just remarkable. It's one of the biggest assets of this community," says Margaret.

People who live in retirement communities are less lonely, more active, and more engaged than before they moved in, according to a June 2025 U.S. News & World Report survey--and Charlestown is no exception.

"Residents are free to focus on the activities and friendships that bring them joy," says Community Resources Manager Mary Evans. "The worry-free lifestyle provides time to explore interests and build connections. When you're part of a vibrant, supportive community like Charlestown, you naturally feel and live better."

A warm welcome

While settling into her residence, Margaret received warm welcomes from her new neighbors.

"The people here are wonderful!" says Margaret. "As a newcomer, I found myself asking other residents where to find things on campus. Often, people would say, 'Come on, I'll take you there.'"

She continues, "And on the day I moved to Charlestown, I received an invitation for dinner. I still have dinner regularly with that group."

Charlestown's six dining venues are great places to socialize. Residents enjoy getting to know new neighbors over dinner and then grabbing cocktails with friends afterward. Plus, the delicious entrees, served by attentive waitstaff, are made to order by skilled chefs.

Something for everyone

Evans notes that Charlestown's maintenance-free homes make it easier for residents to have active, social lifestyles.

"Without the responsibility of home repairs, residents have more time to pursue their interests and hobbies and cultivate connections, enriching their lives," she says.

With over 250 clubs on campus, there's something for nearly every interest. From ballroom dancing and pickleball to photography and gardening, it's easy for residents to pursue their passions--or new ones!

Margaret is excited to enjoy her two favorite pastimes, music and reading.

"I promised myself I would free myself of all my obligations when I moved here so I could spend more time studying piano and reading," she says. "I also love to garden, and I'm looking forward to taking some of the classes offered here in the community."

She adds, "I wish I had moved ten years ago. The people here have made it so easy, and I'm just filled with gratitude."

New friends

Margaret's positive experience is echoed by many at the community.

Mark and Cheryl Wong, Columbia, Md., residents for 40 years, were seeking a vibrant, social lifestyle in retirement. And they found it at Charlestown, where their circle of friends has grown exponentially since their 2025 move.

"Our friends introduced us to their friends, who in turn have introduced us to their friends," says Mark. "We are very grateful for how welcome everyone has made us feel."

"There are always opportunities for meeting new people because everyone is friendly; they greet one another and say hello," adds Cheryl. "Some of the people that we met when we were just visiting now live right down the hall from us, and we have become friends."

She continues, "I met a wonderful woman who is a lifelong resident of Catonsville. I was talking to her about the area, and she invited us out for coffee, doughnuts, and a tour of the neighborhood."

'Enjoy this chapter'

Mark and Cheryl are glad that the community's expert General Services team handles all maintenance and repair requests. Without these responsibilities, they have more time to attend classes, lectures, concerts, plays, dances, movies, and happy hours--all right at Charlestown.

"There are so many opportunities here. It's incredible," says Cheryl. "I participate in a resident-run yoga class, which is a joy. We both attend lifelong learning classes offered on campus."

Mark adds, "There is also a great opportunity for spiritual life here because of the Our Lady of the Angels Chapel. We have a fitness center, pool, and community theater as well."

"Residents can fill their calendars with activities, spend time volunteering, or take a trip and know their home is safe and cared for," notes Evans. "That peace of mind lets them truly enjoy this chapter of life."
