Man, Elderly Mother Killed In Catonsville House Fire: Officials

Fire officials say hoarding conditions made it more difficult to fight the fire. Neighbors say the man cared for his mother in the home.

CATONSVILLE, MD — A 54-year-old Catonsville man and his 93-year-old mother lost their lives in a house fire that broke out Friday at 7 a.m. in the 1300 block of Denbright Road. Neighbors told WBAL that Timothy Schwartz took care of his elderly mother, Avonne Schwartz, in the home.

Fire crews from both Catonsville and Westview responded to the two-alarm fire and found heavy flames and smoke pouring out from both the basement and front of the home. A firefighter was injured after he fell through the first floor while trying to rescue the pair. The firefighter was treated and released by a hospital.

According to Baltimore County Fire Lt. Travis Francis, hoarding conditions in the basement made it more difficult to the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
