S.T.A.R., Ltd. Presents 'Into the Woods'

A local theater group presents a musical that gives a new spin on some classic fairy tales.

Have you ever wondered what happens after Happily Ever After? Find out this Friday, July 29, at Frederick Road Fridays, as S.T.A.R., Ltd. presents excerpts from its latest production, Into The Woods, a spellbinding musical that portrays a different take on classic fairy tales.

The full production of Into the Woods, complete with a rapping witch and murderous Little Red Riding Hood, will run August 4-7 at Rice Auditorium on the campus of Spring Grove Hospital.

S.T.A.R., Ltd., whose acronym stands for Supporting The Arts in Relay, focuses on bringing both visual and performing arts to young children and teenagers. Past S.T.A.R. shows include HONK!, Seussical, Beauty and the Beast, and its award-winning musical Urinetown. This year, S.T.A.R. decided to take on one of its biggest challenges yet with Into the Woods.

Tim Adams, a parent volunteer, has put a lot of energy into producing shows for the last two years, but feels the benefits of being involved with the group far outweigh the work required. "Being the producer for this show is wonderful. The talent, enthusiasm, commitment and energy of all the S.T.A.R. kids is so much fun to be around," he said. "Where else could you be part of nearly 50 teenagers having fun while working together to make something magic happen?"

Actors in Into the Woods are from many local middle and high schools. Some have been engaged in S.T.A.R. for many years, while others are brand-new to the group.

S.T.A.R. members agree that the hard work and discipline required to put on a musical is definitely worthwhile. New member Natalie Valentine said, "S.T.A.R. has been a great experience … it mixes both drama and fun."

S.T.A.R. teaches kids and teens how to work together as a group to produce something great. Director Mike Juba observed, "S.T.A.R. is a unique program in that it brings together kids across age groups and from many different areas to create a show that is driven by them and their creative spirit."
