Teen Sought in Catonsville Raid Where Police Officer Killed Found Not Guilty
The teen was acquitted of three charges related to a shooting on Winters Lane.
A Catonsville teen suspected in a nonfatal shooting last August on Winters Lane was found not guilty Thursday in Baltimore County Circuit Court.
The teen—Rasheed Williams Stanford, 17—was the person police were attempting to serve a no-knock warrant on last summer in a Roberts Avenue home when Baltimore County Police Officer Jason Schneider was shot and killed Aug. 28, 2013.
Stanford was not home at the time, according to The Baltimore Sun, which reported his cousin Tevon Smith, 25, was at the house and fatally shot Schneider before another officer answered with a bullet that killed Smith.
The following day, Stanford surrendered to police, the Baltimore County Police Department reported.
This week, Stanford was on trial for the charges which led to the warrant—attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and use of a firearm to commit a felony crime.
The charges were brought against Stanford after a man was injured last August when he was shot outside the Brick House Bar on Winters Lane in Catonsville, according to WBAL.
The victim said from the stand that he was not shot by Stanford, WBAL reported, and it took a jury an hour and a half to deliberate before issuing the not guilty verdict. There were reportedly holes and inconsistencies in the witness' stories.
Stanford's attorney told The Baltimore Sun his client was held accountable for the officer's death, stating: "There is a feeling there was no one alive to pay."
