🌱 Unauthorized CHS Social Accounts + Redistricting Map Moves Fwd

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Catonsville.

Morning, neighbors! It's me again, Nicole Fallon-Peek, your host of the Catonsville Daily.

First, today's weather:

Partly sunny. High: 54 Low: 33.

Here are the top 4 stories today in Catonsville:

  1. Over the weekend, Catonsville High School principal Mr. Matt Ames sent a letter to families asking for help addressing the rise in anonymous, unauthorized social media accounts associated with the school. Mr. Ames implored parents to monitor their children's cell phone activity. "I am confident that our entire community will rally around this and that parents whose childrens' phones are the origin of these venues for hateful content and distractors, will monitor them at least as often as they pay for them," he wrote. 2. Baltimore County is pressing on with its redistricting proposal, despite public criticism over the lone majority Black district out of seven. The County Council's proposed map would, among other things, create a 1st District surrounding Catonsville, Arbutus, and Halethorpe with a "majority nonwhite" population as a compromise, since Council members and other plan architects say the map can't be redrawn to create the second Black-majority district critics have called for. However, community and civil rights groups have threatened to challenge the map in court if approved. (Baltimore Sun)
  3. The thousands of parents who pulled their children out of Maryland public schools during COVID-19 closures are slowly starting to reenroll their students — but enrollment isn't yet back to pre-pandemic numbers. One parent, Erin Furth of Catonsville, decided to home-school her three children because she didn't want to commit to a year in virtual learning, she told the Baltimore Sun. She had planned to reenroll them when they were fully vaccinated, but news of the new omicron variant is giving her, and likely other local parents, a reason to hold off a bit longer.
