Here are the top stories today in and around Catonsville:
- Unemployment in the Catonsville area is slowly but surely improving, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Baltimore County unemployment rate was 5 percent in October, down from 5.2 percent in September. October's numbers show more than a full percentage point drop from last October, when the unemployment rate was 6.3 percent. (Catonsville Patch)
- This week, the Baltimore County Council voted unanimously to block the Davis Farms housing project, a proposed 19-home subdivision off Maple Avenue in Catonsville. Neighbors had also widely opposed the project, saying the new homes would have added traffic, exacerbated flooding, crowded schools, and worsened dangerous conditions at Maple Avenue's intersection with Frederick Road. This decision reinforces the county's master plan to promote open space for a more sustainable future. (Free: Flipboard; Subscription: Baltimore Sun)
- This Saturday, Dec. 11, marks the 20th annual Shop with a Cop event in Baltimore County. At approximately 8 a.m., the officers and children will arrive at the Walmart store in Cockeysville (1 Frankel Way) and be greeted by members of the Optimist Club of Baltimore County. Each child will receive $100 to spend as they choose, and many opt to buy holiday gifts for family and friends. One hundred officers and one hundred children will be taking part in this year's local tradition, which is the largest event of its kind in the state. (Press Release Desk)
