Black Lion Cafe plans to open College Park location this December (dbknews.com) — A new Black Lion Café is slated to open at Union on Knox in College Park this December, bringing Ethiopian specialty coffee, light meals, and more than 100 seats of study space steps from campus. The family-owned shop plans to hire mostly students, offer a drip-coffee subscription, and position itself as a comfortable hangout and study spot for the university community.
2. 70-Year-Old High School Teacher Charged with Multiple Counts of Child Pornography (smnewsnet.com) — Maryland State Police have charged a 70-year-old College Park resident with multiple counts of distributing and possessing child pornography after a state task force investigation and a search of his College Park home. Investigators say he currently teaches at a private high school in Bladensburg and are asking anyone with relevant information to contact the Child Exploitation Unit.
3. Founders Week 2026: Public Servant of the Year Ramsay Koury, DMD (umaryland.edu) — A University of Maryland School of Dentistry professor who organizes Mission of Mercy clinics is being honored for bringing free dental care to underserved Marylanders, including regular events in College Park. His volunteer-driven program has treated nearly 4,000 patients statewide while giving students hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of access-to-care challenges. Upcoming clinics continue this fall.
4. UMD students, staff say fall break helps them recharge despite course disruptions (dbknews.com) — Students and staff at the University of Maryland in College Park are preparing for the campus's second fall break on Oct. 12–13, giving them a rare mid-semester pause. While some professors have had to adjust test schedules and course pacing, many students and faculty say the extra days help them rest, travel, and catch up before the push to Thanksgiving.

Maryland Competitiveness Conversation Summary Report (compete.org) — A major innovation summit on AI and quantum computing recently wrapped up at the University of Maryland in College Park, drawing state leaders, CEOs, and researchers. The two-day event highlighted how Maryland and UMD are positioning themselves as national players in cutting-edge technologies that could shape jobs, research funding, and industry growth around College Park.
