Dalai Lama to Speak at University of Maryland Tuesday

The head monk of Tibetan Buddhism will deliver the Anwar Sadat Lecture for Peace.

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama will be in College Park tomorrow to deliver the Anwar Sadat Lecture for Peace in front of an estimated crowd of 15,000.

The speech, “Peace Through Compassion: Connecting a Multi-Faith World,” will take place at the Comcast Center on the University of Maryland campus from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The Dalai Lama will speak in English for about 45 minutes and answer questions submitted by the audience.

The head monk of Tibetan Buddhism, the Dalai Lama is an advocate for world peace, religious harmony and scientific discovery. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 and has traveled to more than 62 countries in six continents, according to his website.

The Anwar Sadat Chair for Peace and Development lecture series was established at the university in 1997 in memory of the late Egyptian president.

Many other world leaders have given the Sadat Lecture at the university in years past, including former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, and former South African President Nelson Mandela.
