Deadline for Mayor and Council Candidacy Is Friday

Municipal seats up for election in November.

Mayor and Council seats will be up for grabs in November, and the deadline to turn in petitions for candidacy is 5 p.m. Friday.

If you plan to throw your hat in the ring for either mayor or one of eight council seats, here are some details to keep in mind:

  • Mayor must be 25 years of age at the time of entering office.
  • Council members must be 21 years of age.
  • Each candidate must be a U.S. citizen, Maryland resident and a registered voter of College Park.
  • Each officer must have continuously lived in College Park for a complete year preceding the date of election.
  • Each council member must reside in the district from which he/she was elected.
  • District boundaries were recently redrawn. The up-to-date districts are depicted in the map accompanying this post.

As of Monday, 15 individuals had picked up candidacy packets. Four indicated interest in running for District 1 seats; three in District 2; three in District 3; three in District 4; and four for the position of mayor.
