Crime Victims' Town Hall Meeting and Panel Discussion

A crime victims’ forum will take place on Tuesday, October 23. The town hall meeting, which will also feature a panel discussion with guest speakers and county officials, is for anyone who has been a victim of any type of crime. The event is open to the public.

Speakers include Ricardo Wiggs and Bonnita Spikes. Wiggs and his wife, Sharon, were shot in their home in 1992. Sharon was killed. Spikes’ husband was shot in a convenience store robbery in 1994. They are both leading voices for victims and victim survivors in Maryland.

The event is sponsored by Prince George’s Community College, the Administration of Justice Collegian Center, Prince George’s County NAACP and Maryland Citizens for State Executions. Maryland is one of a handful of states that the NAACP is working in to end capital punishment.

The Maryland Commission on Capital Punishment identified several problems with the state's death penalty system in 2008 and called for ending capital punishment. Among its findings, the commission concluded that racial disparities exist in Maryland's capital punishment system. It also cited the high cost of applying the death penalty and the toll it takes on the family members of murder victims.
