
MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts will be the keynote speaker during this free daylong eventdesigned to engage the University of Maryland and surrounding communities in a conversation about coverage of LGBTQ issues and newsroom identity.
Two panels will feature prominent LGBTQ journalists. The first, at 11 a.m., will examine LGBTQ stories; the second, at 4:30 p.m., will focus on LGBTQ storytellers. MSNBC anchor and Maryland native Thomas Roberts will deliver our keynote address at 7 p.m.

Journalism is about telling stories, and the past year alone has provided countless opportunities for media across the country to share stories of LGBTQ people. From growing coverage of discrimination and violence faced by transgender people to stories of the unprecedented gains by marriage equality advocates, this panel of experts from across the spectrum will share their thoughts and advice on telling LGBTQ stories.

4:30 p.m. - 6 p.m. Panel II: LGBTQ Storytellers and Newsroom Identity
LGBTQ stories are produced and written in newsrooms across the country and world. As part of changes in the public attitudes surrounding LGBTQ people, more newsrooms count LGBT journalists among their ranks. Journalists with experience at local and national mainstream media publications, wire services and LGBT publications will share their perspectives on the role that out LGBT people play in newsrooms and in creating newsrooms’ identities.
