Ø   First we’ll hear from Lakeland resident and former elected official Maxine Gross about the Lakeland community’s achievements-- how Lakeland became the City of College Park’s premiere African American community through the hard work of many generations of residents who worked hard to raise their families and to make this place a community where people are cared for and where people don’t “fall through the cracks.”  As a leader of the Lakeland Community Heritage Project (LCHP), a Lakeland-based non-profit, Maxine  will emphasize the importance of making an art work that honors the community’s achievements as a way to promote and sustain this way of life in the community.

Ø  Next, the painting team will work with mural artist Helina Metaferia to begin the mural design process.  Ms. Metaferia is an Ethiopian American fine artist.  Her art has been shown in museums and galleries nationwide. She has also completed over fifteen large scale murals in the Washington, DC region. Helina received her formal art education at Temple University's Tyler School of Art and at Morgan State University, where she obtained her BA in Fine Art.

Ø  FUTURE SESSIONS WILL TAKE PLACE ON SATURDAYS FROM 2-5 PM AT THE COMMUNITY CENTER.  THE SCHEDULE OF ALL FUTURE SESSIONS WILL BE ANNOUNCED.

When: NEXT SATURDAY October 6th from 2-5 PM

Where: College Park Community Center (5051 Pierce Avenue)
