The Troupe, which is open to University of Maryland students of all abilities, will perform men’s and women’s gymnastics apparatus and trampoline routines with exciting variations, as well as novelty acrobatic acts that incorporate ordinary objects such chairs and ladders in unexpected ways. The vaulting act that opens every show features troupers launching themselves off of two mini-trampolines and performing criss-crossing handsprings, round-offs and flips over six teammates and a wooden vault box. The heart-pounding act ends with troupers flipping through Gymkana’s infamous ring of fire!
Founded at the University of Maryland College Park Campus in 1946, the Gymkana Troupe is a nonprofit, collegiate, exhibition gymnastics and acrobatics group that aims to demonstrate the benefits of healthy living by performing for area youth. The Troupe is an outreach program of the University of Maryland School of Public Health. Each of its members pledges to be 100% drug-free, alcohol-free and tobacco free. Through role modeling and their unique gymnastic performances, members present a powerful anti-drug message in a medium that youth can understand.
