I Like It On the Internet

Breast cancer is bad. Is acknowledging that enough?

Everybody is freaking out about Breast Cancer Awareness Month and that's a very good thing. The only way to find is a cure is to increase funding and the way to do that is raise awareness. People, even if they're not big-time activists or scientists or whatever, need to get involved. Even six days into October, I've seen tons of people doing fundraisers and the area's Relays for Life have always gotten a lot of hype.

One thing that's bugging me? The latest Facebook meme going around, the "I like it on the --" status updates. For the uninitiated, people- almost exclusively women- are changing their statuses to say "I like it on the desk," or "I like it on the floor," or any other variation of intentionally saucy-sounding phrases when in reality it's a reference to where they put their purses when they come home. It's supposed to be a secret and it's somehow supposed to raise breast cancer awareness. I don't think it will, but that's not the point — everybody could change their statuses (statii?) to "CANCER IS SO BAD" and it would be flawed in the same way: it makes people feel like they're doing something when they're probably not.

I love feeling that I'm making a difference. But I also like feeling that I'm making a difference without really trying, which really doesn't change anything. So to the people that like it on the whatever-it-is: don't forget a Facebook status never changed anything. Do something.
