The Basics: Maryland Book Exchange Development

Developers want to construct a six-story complex for student housing and retail space where the currently sits. Here are the basic details of that development, according to the Mayor and Council .

• R & J Company, LLC wants to build a mixed-use development in the 2.71-acre area where the Maryland Book Exchange currently sits, northeast of the intersection of Baltimore and College avenues.
• The current plan includes 341 units of student housing, 109 of which would be marked for graduate students, with a total of 1,010 beds.
• The plan includes 14,366 square feet of retail space on the first of six floors. The Maryland Book Exchange would move back into the space after development is complete.
• The plan includes 329 structured parking spaces on two levels.
• This is the first development project of the Central U.S. 1 Corridor Sector Plan, which, recommends goals, policies, strategies, and actions pertaining to land use, zoning and development, according to the county planning board website.
• The College Park City Council , but the project’s fate is ultimately in the hands of the county.
• The Prince George’s County Planning Board will hear the case at 10 a.m. Nov. 3 in the County Council Hearing Room of the County Administration Building.
• The Prince George's County Historic Preservation Commission will hear the case 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18 on the first-floor media conference room of the County Administration Building.
