The Great American Backyard Campout

REI and the Department of Natural Resources are working together to create a night of fun and learning for families.

My husband thinks I am the world’s most enthusiastic person. I am not sure he means it as a compliment, but I take it that way. This week I am really excited about an event that is happening in backyards, parks and beaches across out country.

While my husband is right about me being easily excited, this event, the Great American Backyard Campout, plays to all the things I love about summer. Being outside, sleeping under the stars, playing with my children, and singing by the campfire.

Locally the event is being sponsored by REI College Park, the National Wildlife Federation and the Department of Natural Resources.

Nine state parks are organizing family events on June 25 that include a night of camping under the stars, campfire songs and of course s’mores. REI College Park is specifically sponsoring the event being held at Patapsco Valley State Park giving them the opportunity to teach families more about camping and the environment.

Each event will begin on June 25 at 10 a.m. and go throughout the day, into the evening, finally ending on the 26th at noon.

The event gives families the opportunity to learn more about camping in a group environment as opposed to jumping into camping without the experience. Instead of roughing it, campers will come together, helping each other set up tents and camp sites and creating a social environment.

While families who are not able to attend one of the organized events are encouraged to camp in their own backyards or organize neighborhood camping events of their own, each park is hoping to see families attending their unique event. And just between you and me, it looks as though there is a little competition going on between the parks and their staff.

While the Elk Neck event will host a night time hike and several opportunities for organized canoeing, the event at Dan’s Mountain State Park will be hosting an organized night swim and campers at Deep Creek State Park will be able to choose between an owl prowl, star gazing or the opportunity to attract bats.

The Great American Backyard Campout events in the state parks range in price but are on average $25 per family including the camp site and activities.

Families who are planning on hosting their own camping event, either in the back yard or in a common land in their neighborhood, are encouraged to stop by REI to learn more about the event, what equipment you will need and how to make the night more than just another camping trip.
