COLUMBIA, MD — When life gets to be too much, local residents can take out their frustration on a sheet of wood at Stumpy's Hatchet House, a national franchise that will be opening its second Maryland location at 6695 Dobbin Road in Columbia.

The 10,000-square-foot indoor facility is configured with fourteen “pits” that provide a safe and controlled environment for participants to take individual turns aiming for a bullseye-style target, with scores kept to determine the winners. The business is perfect for group outings, corporate gatherings and individuals looking for an hour or two of fun wielding an ax.

The Stumpy’s Hatchet House concept was invented by two couples who, while enjoying an outdoor barbecue, started experimenting with an impromptu game of ax throwing while chopping wood for a fire.

“Stumpy’s is differentiated by other ax throwing concepts with its higher-end product design that emphasizes the socialization element, highlighted by an expansive lounge area,” explained Ted Clements, who is among the four owners of Columbia Ax, LLC, the Maryland franchise group. “This location will be selling beer and wine onsite, with the top local catering companies servicing the facility, highlighted by a relaxed and entertaining environment that accentuates a social throw down. The act of throwing an ax is extremely addictive and cathartic and we expect multiple repeat visitors.”

One-hour sessions are available for groups of one to four people, while two-hour sessions are required for groups larger than five people. Multiple pits can be reserved for extended periods of time for special events and activities.
