Lane Closure Planned For Traffic Calming Project

Only one lane will be open during construction hours for a traffic calming project that starts Monday on a busy Howard County road.

COLUMBIA, MD — Starting Monday, crews will start installing speed humps, raised intersections and a raised crosswalk on a busy stretch of road to help reduce excessive speeding. Traffic will be reduced to one lane on this particular roadway.

Weather permitting, the project should wrap up by late June.

Traffic calming tools will be installed on High Tor Hill from Phelps Luck Drive to Tamar Drive in Columbia as part of the county's Howard County Neighborhood Traffic Calming Policy.

"In Howard County, we are committed to making our streets and roads safer for pedestrians, bicyclists, drivers and all road users. Through our Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program, we are bringing more traffic calming solutions to neighborhoods to slow down speeds and improve safety across the county. When complete, this neighborhood street in Columbia will be safer and more friendly for all," stated Howard County Executive Calvin Ball.

Signs will be posted to make drivers and residents aware of the construction, and flagging operations will be in place to direct traffic through the work zone, as only one lane of traffic will be open during construction hours, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
