HOWARD COUNTY, MD — The Howard County Sheriff's Office will implement AI-powered language translation technology into their body-worn cameras to provide real-time translations into more than 50 languages.
"(This) allows our deputies to communicate more effectively with community members who have limited English proficiency. By improving communication, we can better serve Howard County's diverse community while enhancing public safety and building stronger relationships," the sheriff's office stated.
Officials said the feature will help deputies communicate more effectively during traffic stops, court security operations, civil process interactions, warrant service and other public safety encounters.
"Clear communication is essential to effective law enforcement and building trust within our community," Sheriff Marcus Harris said in a statement. "This technology helps our deputies better serve Howard County's diverse population by breaking down language barriers and ensuring everyone can understand important information during interactions with our Office."
