COLUMBIA, MD — Most people spy vultures circling in the sky, looking below on the ground for prey or cleaning up roadkill on the side of the street. But residents in one Columbia neighborhood regularly see flocks of vultures hanging out in droves at one person's home — and they are fed up, they said in interviews with The Banner.
The large birds were visible perched on the neighbor's back deck railing, on her roof and all over the backyard. A little investigating led the neighbors to discover that Feng Sun has been regularly feeding the vultures raw meat, and now they don't want to leave the Long Reach village's Glenmont neighborhood.
The neighbors told The Banner that a persistent smell of decaying meat has blanketed the area, accompanied by a considerable amount of poop running down their roofs and regurgitated chicken bones scattered around their yards.
According to The Banner, Sun first left out upwards of 40 cans of cat food per day before switching to raw chicken. Through the winter, she fed the vultures more than 200 pounds of chicken each day.
Sun started feeding the birds several years ago but was ordered to stop. She started up again last August, prompting the county health department to intervene. A Howard County Circuit Court judge later fined her $2,500 for violating county health code.
Now, she's fighting the July 21 ruling and representing herself in court.
