COLUMBIA, MD — The community has the opportunity to help name the new early childhood center located at the Faulkner Ridge Center in Columbia.
Leaders broke ground on Aug. 4 on the first-ever regional pre-kindergarten facility in the Howard County Public School System.
Howard County Board of Education Policy 6050, Naming and Renaming Schools requires that all schools be named using geographic terms related to the areas of the county they serve. Given that the new early childhood center will serve students across Howard County, any geographic terms from within Howard County can be used, the school district stated.
Students, staff and family members are encouraged to submit their name suggestions using this online form. All suggestions must be submitted by Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. to be considered.
All names will be reviewed and considered by a committee of HCPSS stakeholders, and a list of recommendations will be presented to the board of education for selection at a future date.
Faulkner Ridge originally opened in 1969 as an elementary school. In 1983, the school closed and the building was repurposed before sitting empty in 2011.
The latest renovation of the building into a pre-kindergarten facility will include new electrical, mechanical, plumbing, technology, roofing and life safety systems. Interior spaces will be reconfigured, new finishes will be provided, and accessibility will be improved. When completed, 260 new pre-kindergarten seats will be available.
Construction on the Faulkner Ridge Early Learning Center should wrap up by August 2027.
