COLUMBIA, MD — A retailer in Columbia recently sold a 6-figure winning lottery ticket to an overjoyed 20-year-old college student.
The winner claimed the $150,000 prize Monday and shared with Maryland Lottery officials that he took a chance and bought a Powerball ticket after seeing on the news that the jackpot had soared to more than half a billion dollars in early August.
The college kid popped by the Harris Teeter at 8620 Guilford Road in Columbia to purchase a ticket, but didn't expect much to happen. A few days after the drawing, he finally checked his ticket.
That's when he discovered he'd won $150,000. He rushed home to share the news with his family.
"I ran laps around the house," the winner told lottery officials.
As a college student, the unexpected windfall comes at a perfect time. While he hasn't made any firm plans for his winnings, he said he would like to take a nice vacation and possibly purchase his dream car, a BMW M5.
