WOODBINE, MD — An 18-year-old who police say was driving drunk Monday afternoon rear-ended a box truck that flipped over, killing the passenger and injuring the driver.

The two-vehicle fatal crash happened shortly before 4 p.m. near Morgan Station Road. Maryland state troopers were called to eastbound I-70 for a report of a crash. They found the passenger of an Isuzu box truck dead at the scene. He was identified as Sakee Ali Davis, 32, of Havre de Grace. The preliminary investigation indicates that both vehicles were traveling east on I-70 when a Genesis G80, driven by John Amare, 18, of Damascus, hit the back of the box truck, causing the box truck to lose control, crash into a guardrail and overturn, state police said.

Amare has been charged with negligent motor vehicle homicide while under the influence, motor vehicle homicide while impaired by alcohol, negligent manslaughter and other related charges and citations. He is being held without bond at the Howard County Detention Center.

Lanes were closed for approximately four hours for the crash investigation. The Maryland State Police Crash Team continues to lead the active and ongoing investigation.
