Earn Cash Back At Appliance Recycling Event Saturday In Columbia

Residents can recycle working small appliances Saturday at a drop-off event and earn a $50 reward.

COLUMBIA, MD — Residents can drop off small appliances Saturday at a recycling event hosted by BGE and the Columbia Association and earn cash back for their efforts.

Residential customers can receive a $50 reward for turning in old but working room A/C units, dehumidifiers and mini fridges.

The drop-off event will run from 8 a.m. to noon at 9450 Gerwig Lane in Columbia.

Since 2013, BGE customers have recycled more than 5,912 units through these events, recycling in excess of 183 tons of waste instead of sending the appliances to the landfill, Cynthia Edwards, senior energy efficiency program manage for BGE, told Patch.

"As of yesterday, Sept. 17, there are 99 customers pre-registered for the event with 155 appliances registered thus far," Edwards told Patch.

Rain or shine, BGE representatives will be on hand to safely unload old appliances from customers' vehicles. Units must be in working condition to be eligible. Customers will receive a check in the mail approximately six to eight weeks after the event.

"From previous events, the most commonly recycled appliances are room air conditioners, with 157 having been recycled this year alone. Including BGE appliance recycling home pickups, refrigerators are the most commonly recycled appliances, with 1,902 having been recycled so far this year," Edwards told Patch.

BGE hosts two to three appliance recycling drop-off events each year in the greater Baltimore area, Edwards said. The last time BGE held an appliance recycling event in Columbia was last June, Edwards said.
