$83K Lotto Win A Message From Jessup Woman's ‘Angel’

JESSUP, MD — A Jessup woman who won $83,175 playing Racetrax believes the prize's timing was a message from her late husband.

The longtime Maryland Lottery player bought the winning ticket Sept. 2 at High's, 2861 Jessup Road in Jessup.

The woman said she has played Racetrax nearly every day since a friend introduced her to the game years ago. She previously won several sizable prizes, including one worth more than $20,000.

This time, however, she changed her usual routine. Instead of using her usual strategy, she let Quick Pick choose her numbers.

The next morning, she checked the ticket several times using the Maryland Lottery and My Lottery Rewards apps because she was not sure she was reading the result correctly. When she realized she had won $83,175, she screamed loudly enough that her daughter rushed into the room.

"She thought something happened to me," the winner said.

The win came not long after the unexpected death of her husband, whom she called her "angel." The woman said the unusual change in her routine and the timing of the win felt meaningful and made her believe her husband was still looking out for her. She had several weeks to decide what to do with the money before claiming the prize late last month. Ultimately, she decided to save it.

"It's going back in savings," she said.

The winner is a CEO of a construction business and also is a mother and grandmother who enjoys traveling and spending time with her family.

High's will receive an $831.75 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
