Black Marylanders' Contribution to Freedom on Display at HCLS
In Freedom's Name Exhibition on Display Across HCLS Branches June 15 through August 18

Howard County Library System (HCLS) will present its first system-wide exhibition beginning June 15 when it hosts In Freedom’s Name, the largest exhibition of its kind in US history.
The six-part series of display panels commemorates the military contributions of Maryland’s Black men and women to the expansion of freedom from 1634 until today. Each HCLS branch will host a selection of different modules from the exhibition. Together the panels document 400 years of history through 63 stories and 250 images. Featured content and the specific branch location are listed below.
- HCLS Central Branch: World War I, Freedom's Frontier, & Winning the Frontier
- HCLS Elkridge Branch: Civil War
- HCLS East Columbia Branch: Colonial Era, American Revolution, Spanish American War
- HCLS Glenwood Branch: World War II
- HCLS Miller Branch: War of 1812 & Korean War
- HCLS Savage Branch : Fight Against Slavery, Vietnam War
To further enhance the In Freedom’s Name learning experience, an HCLS Compass Learning Adventure will accompany the systemwide exhibit. This recently introduced, self-directed, adult learning initiative, provides participants the opportunity to design their own path by choosing from a variety of related educational activities. The new learning module can be found online at hclibrary.org and at all library branches beginning June 15.
