Blandair Park Poised for Phase 3 of Development

County Executive Allan Kittleman said work would start this fall on third phase for Blandair Regional Park in Columbia.

COLUMBIA, MD – Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman announced Monday that he plans to speed up plans for Blandair Park in Columbia by pushing through $3.25 million in the FY 2017 budget.

The park off MD 175 opened in 2012, and its first phase of development included a sports facility with three turf fields, a playground, pavilion and restroom.

Phase two, which is anticipated to be finished by spring 2017, will include two turf fields, five tennis courts, a playground and restroom.

The third phase will encompass a dog park, picnic shelter, restrooms and "Play-for-All" playground designed for children of varying abilities. Kittleman said that a focus group of citizens helped shape the concept for the play area, which will be 80 percent accessible and provide opportunities for those with disabilities.

"It is a priority for us to provide inclusive recreational facilities in our parks," Kittleman said.

Phase three also includes backyard games such as bocce and horseshoes and construction of a maintenance building for Blandair Park.

"When complete, Blandair Regional will rival our other top parks..." Kittleman said. "We recognize its value not only for our residents of today but also for generations to come."

Work will start this fall on phase three at Blandair Regional Park, according to Kittleman.
