Columbia Deck Collapse Sends 5 to Hospitals, Authorities Say

Firefighters and paramedics responded to collapse before midnight.

Five people were taken to area hospitals following a deck collapse in Columbia Tuesday night, according to the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services. Officials said all injuries were believed to be non life-threatening.

First responders were called to the 6300 block of Wind Rider Way at approximately 11:15 p.m., where there were six people in need of medical attention, authorities reported.

A group of college-age individuals had been hanging out on the deck when the wood creaked and gave way approximately 10 feet, causing injuries such as broken bones and sprained ankles, according to CBS DC.

The Howard County Department of Inspections, Licenses and Permits will evaluate the structure Wednesday, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Inspectors will also check on the status of nearby decks for safety, WNEW reports.
