'Extensive Damage' From Columbia House Fire Displaces 2 Residents: HCDFRS
One firefighter was hospitalized and a water main break occurred during the firefighting operation, Howard County Fire and Rescue reported.
COLUMBIA, MD - Crews responded to a house fire in Columbia Saturday night that damaged a home, sent one firefighter to the hospital and resulted in a water main break in the area, according to the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services.
Firefighters responded to the home in the 10900 block of Rum Cay Court at approximately 9:30 p.m. after a resident reported the fire, officials said. Both people in the home had evacuated before crews arrived.
First responders found heavy fire on the first floor that had extended into the second story of the two-story home, officials said.

One firefighter was taken to Howard County General Hospital for an injury that was not believed to be life-threatening, authorities reported. The two residents of the home were evaluated for smoke inhalation but declined to be treated.
Officials said that due to "extensive damage" to the home, residents were being assisted by family.

The bulk of the fire was out by 9:45 p.m., according to authorities.
Public works crews were called to the scene because a water main broke; however, it did not affect the supply for the firefight.
The fire marshal was investigating the cause of the blaze.
