Highland Crash Into Fence, Tree Injures 2: Police

The crash temporarily shut down a road in Highland Friday morning.

HIGHLAND, MD (Updated at 12:45 p.m.) - Police said two people were hospitalized after a crash Friday morning in Highland that closed a road for about 90 minutes.

At 10:13 a.m., a Chevrolet Suburban was headed west on Highland Road when for unknown reasons, officials said the vehicle left the road and hit a fence, then crashed into a tree. No other cars were involved.

While officials at first classified the crash as serious, police later said the driver and passenger were being treated for injuries less severe than originally stated.

Driver Edward C. Whren, 37, and passenger Itimia A. Gray, 36 - both of Washington, D.C. - were taken to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, where they were listed in stable condition, police said.

Highland Road was closed between Mink Hollow Road at Skye Drive for the response. By 11:48 a.m., police said that the road had reopened.
