Police: 1 Dead, 4 Injured in I-95 Crash in Howard County

A fatal head-on collision shut down Interstate 95 Friday afternoon near MD 216.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — A Maryland man died Friday after his van crossed the Interstate 95 median and hit a car head-on before colliding with a tractor-trailer, according to Maryland State Police.

Police are not identifying the man, pending next of kin notification. He died on the way to the hospital, officials said.

The van passenger was flown by Maryland State Police helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center and has not yet been identified.

Three others were hospitalized as a result of the crash, police said. Two people in the Hyundai Sonata that was hit head-on (Grace O. Hansen, 54, of Rockville and passenger Jasmin J. Hansen, 20, of Stafford, VA), and the driver of the tractor-trailer (Thomas E. Dombroski, 55, of Williamstown, NJ) were taken to Howard County General Hospital.

Police said that it was unknown why the van driver, who had been headed south toward MD 216, crossed the I-95 median and drove into oncoming, northbound traffic. The crash occurred north of the Laurel rest area.

Because of the investigation into the fatal crash, some lanes were closed on I-95. Officials said the highway had completely reopened by 2:30 p.m.

PREVIOUS REPORT — Due to a crash, Interstate 95 was temporarily shut down in Howard County Friday afternoon. The closure impacted traffic south of the exit for MD 216 on I-95.

The multi-vehicle crash occurred before 12:30 p.m. on Friday.

As of 2:30 p.m., state transportation officials reported all lanes had reopened on I-95 in the area of MD 216.

The collision involved a vehicle that crossed over the highway and hit another head-on, according to WBAL, which said after the crash traffic was diverted through the rest area.

At least two helicopters were called for medical transport, WTOP reported.

By 12:45 p.m., transportation officials said there were 6 miles of backups on I-95 north and 4.5 miles on I-95 south. As of 1 p.m., two southbound lanes had reopened, while I-95 north remained closed.
