Erica L. Pullen Releases Children's Book 'Believing in Myself'
Author inspires children to never give up on dreams

By Tawanda W. Johnson
African-American author Erica L. Pullen, of Owings Mills, Md., has released her first children’s book, “Believing in Myself,” to inspire children to never give up on their dreams, despite the odds that appear to be stacked against them. Her book tells the story of a young girl who aspires to become a ballerina but lacks the confidence to achieve her goal because of the standards set by society.
While growing up in Pittsburgh, Pa., Pullen endured verbal bullying by neighborhood children who taunted her because of her dark skin. She recalled being called terrible names such as “blacky, tar
baby and ugly.” Pullen said the negative labels made her feel awful.

She found the courage to confront her insecurities by challenging herself to participate in the Miss Black Teenage Pageant program at age 14. She wrote and performed a monologue titled “Believing in Myself,” which led to her being named the youngest first runner-up contestant in the pageant.
After completing her graduate degree, Pullen became an author and motivational speaker with a focus on sharing her experience with other young girls.

She hopes her book will encourage the hearts and minds of children who also struggle with self-esteem issues. Pullen remarked, “If I can encourage at least one child with this book, then I am on my way to accomplishing my dreams and goals.”
