Fire in Columbia Upgraded to Three Alarms: Officials

Multiple crews were battling a raging house fire Wednesday night in Columbia.

Crews are at the scene of a three-alarm house fire in Columbia Wednesday night, according to the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services.

The fire broke out in the 12000 block of Sleepy Horse Lane, the department reported at 8:10 p.m.

Multiple townhomes are on fire, with reports of people trapped, according to the department.

At least one person was rescued and one BGE worker was injured, the department reported, noting it was unclear where he was at the time the blaze began.

People calling 911 initially reported hearing an explosion, the department said in a statement. When crews arrived, they reportedly found at least one residence engulfed by flames.

The explosion was reported at 7:30 p.m., according to WBAL.

After 8:20 p.m., the fire department said the blaze had spread and crews were continuing to search for people trapped.
