Fire Damages Classroom At Swansfield Elementary, School Officials Say

Firefighters handled a blaze Saturday afternoon at an elementary school in Columbia.

COLUMBIA, MD - Fire did minor damage to Swansfield Elementary School in Columbia Saturday afternoon, according to the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services.

At 3:15 p.m., firefighters responded to the 5600 block of Cedar Lane, where construction materials were ablaze at the school.

Within 10 minutes, crews reported the fire had been knocked on the exterior of the building.

Flames from the debris went through a window and did minor damage to the interior, according to officials.

One classroom was damaged, Swansfield Elementary School administrators said in a statement.

"We do not anticipate this will have any impact on school opening on time," the statement said.

School officials said that a restoration team was working on the affected area, and the cause of the fire was under investigation.
