Flooding Reported In Laurel: Flash Flood Warning Expires

The MARC station, BWI and at least one intersection were impacted by Thursday's thunderstorms.

BALTIMORE, MD — Minor flooding was reported Thursday night during a flash flood warning. A road was closed in Laurel temporarily near the MARC station, and BWI experienced some delays.

The National Weather Service issued the flash flood warning, effective from 6:37 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 31. Under a flash flood warning, water levels may rise rapidly.

Police closed the intersection of Main Street in Laurel near Lafayette Avenue after 8:05 p.m. due to localized flooding.

By 9:40 p.m., officials said the road had reopened.

The MARC station nearby had minor flooding, Maryland Transit Administration officials said before 8:15 p.m., asking passengers to use caution.

A flash flood watch remains in effect for central Maryland until 2 a.m. on Friday, June 1.

Some at flights at BWI were experiencing delays due to thunderstorms, airport officials reported after 8 p.m.

In the already saturated areas in Catonsville, Oella, Old Ellicott City and Baltimore, also under the flash flood warning, people were encouraged to move to higher ground and beware that waters may rise quickly.

Weather officials warned that 1 to 2 inches of rain may fall before 8 p.m.

"We are closely monitoring the situation in historic Ellicott City. Nothing to report at this time," Howard County government officials said in an update at 7:50 p.m.

The flash flood warning was issued for parts of Howard and Baltimore counties as well as Baltimore City.

During the flash flood warning, locations that may experience flooding include Baltimore, Columbia, Elkridge, Ellicott City, Catonsville, Woodlawn, Arbutus, Linthicum, Lansdowne, Oella and Halethorpe.

Specifically, weather officials said these areas may experience flash flooding:

  • River Road along the Patapsco River
  • Security Boulevard near Dead Run near I-70
  • Levering Avenue at River Road
  • Park Drive at Church Road
  • Avoca Avenue at Red Branch
  • Route 1 at Levering Avenue near the Patapsco
  • Chatham Road at Route 40
  • Diamondback Drive at Route 29
  • Furnace Avenue at Ridge Road
