Parking Police: Howard County Patrols Handicapped Spots

Four lots in Columbia were included in joint enforcement patrol by Howard County Police Department, Motor Vehicle Administration.

Police issued nine citations Wednesday to drivers for improperly using or not possessing handicapped placards, according to a report from the Howard County Police Department.

Law enforcement officers and the Motor Vehicle Administration patrolled several parking lots around Howard County asked people going into and out of handicapped spots to show their disability identification cards, police reported.

During the two-and-a-half-hour patrol, police said officials made contact with 70 drivers at these lots:

  • Columbia—Howard Community College, The Mall in Columbia, Walmart and Target
  • Ellicott City—Walmart and Target

As a result of the initiative, nine people were cited, police reported.

Depending on the violation, each citation triggers a fine from $140 to $350, according to the report.
