Ellicott City Man Arrested After Hitting Officers With Getaway Car: Baltimore City Police

An Ellicott City man has been arrested after Baltimore City Police say he hit an officer with his SUV while fleeing the scene of a crime.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — An Ellicott City man has been arrested for an incident that happened in Baltimore City where police say he injured officers while fleeing a store after shoplifting there.

Police arrested 33-year-old Alex Husson of Ellicott City in the 9700 block of Robert Jay Way in Ellicott City. The incident happened around 11 a.m. when officers were investigating a burglary that happened at a shopping center in the 3400 block of Wilkens Avenue in Baltimore City when they noticed Husson climbing into a black SUV, trying to get away from the scene of the shoplifting at a 7-Eleven, Acting Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley told WBFF .

When officers tried to stop the vehicle, Worley said a female officer was hit in the hand. Officers fired at the vehicle but it got away. Two officers ended up injured as Husson escaped. The female officer was taken to St. Agnes Hospital for treatment for minor injuries, the police department noted in a report. A second officer, who was experiencing chest pains, was taken to Shock Trauma.

WBFF spoke with customers at the convenience store who said officers should not have shot at the suspect.

"They overreacted, yes, I'm saying they overreacted," said Tracey Hunt who stood outside the store. "(Those officers) should not have shot at that man. No. If you want to shoot at the tires to stop the car, but you want to kill him cause that's what bullets do, right? Cause when you shoot a gun and you're a police officer, you shooting the gun for deadly reasons."

Another customer told WVFF that the police did nothing wrong.

"(I) definitely want (police) engaged in crime. I want to see them take care of all of it," said Warren Davis. "I'd rather they take care of it instead of we being out here taking care of it, you know. I'm not going to say that's what we pay them for, but that's their job."

The Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police issued a statement on X, saying:

"We are aware of the police-involved shooting that has occurred in the Southwest District. It appears our officer was struck by the suspect's car. Injuries are unknown at this time. Our leadership team is responding to the hospital and the Baltimore Police Homicide Unit. More information to follow as it becomes known."
