Nearly 11K Without Power In Howard County After Storm

See which roads and schools are closed as well as where Howard County residents who have power outages can go to charge their devices.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Nearly 11,000 BGE customers without power in Howard County Saturday night, according to the utility company. More than 23,000 people in the county have had their power restored since the windstorm that blew through the mid-Atlantic Friday.

Several roads and schools are closed as a result. See the list below.

Warming centers are open for those who need to shower, warm up or charge their devices.

  • Roger Carter Community Center, 3000 Milltowne Drive in Ellicott City. Open until 10 p.m. on Saturday, reopening at 7 a.m. Sunday.
  • Gary Arthur Community Center, 2400 MD 97 in Cooksville. Open until 9 p.m. on Saturday, reopening at 9 a.m. Sunday.
  • North Laurel Community Center, 9411 Whiskey Bottom Road in Laurel. Open until 9 p.m. on Saturday, reopening at 9 a.m. Sunday.

Road closures as of 3 p.m. Saturday

  • College Avenue at Doncaster Drive; wire pole down
  • College Avenue at High Castle Road; wire pole down
  • Old Hopkins Road at Johns Hopkins Road; tree on utility wire
  • Ross Road at College Avenue; tree on utility wire
  • Cedar Lane at Harriet Tubman Lane; wire pole down
  • Hammond Parkway at Belgar Road; tree on utility wire
  • Sand Hill Road at Metee Road; wire pole down
  • Triadelphia Mill Road at Sapling Ridge Drive; wire pole down
  • Route 40 at St. Johns Lane; partially blocked traffic signal

PREVIOUS REPORT —There are more than 14,000 BGE customers without power as of 9:45 a.m. on Saturday in Howard County. Officials have opened warming centers for those who need to shower or charge their devices. Meanwhile, several roads and schools are closed.

The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement Saturday morning indicating that while winds have died down, drivers and pedestrians should use caution; loosened objects like tree limbs or other debris may topple over.

Wind gusts of 40 to 45 may persist until the early afternoon, so additional power outages are possible.

Here are places to warm up, shower and charge devices:

  • Roger Carter Community Center, 3000 Milltowne Drive in Ellicott City
  • Gary Arthur Community Center, 2400 MD 97 in Cooksville
  • North Laurel Community Center, 9411 Whiskey Bottom Road in Laurel
  • After 9 a.m., Howard County government officials announced these roads were closed:

    • COLLEGE AVE @ DONCASTER DR; blocked for down wire pole
    • SAINT JOHNS LN @ OLD FREDERICK RD; Partial Blocked Traffic Signal - Dark
    • OLD FREDERICK RD @ BETHANY LN; Partial Blocked Traffic Signal - Dark
    • COLUMBIA RD @ DORSEY HALL DR; Partial Blocked Traffic Signal – Dark
    • GORMAN RD @ LEISHEAR RD; Partial Blocked - Wire Pole Down
    • MARRIOTTSVILLE RD @ CAR CO LINE; Partial Blocked - Tree Down
