Howard County Executive Helps Kick Off Holy Month Of Ramadan With MD Governor, CAIR

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball, along with Gov. Larry Hogan, helped kick off the Holy Month of Ramadan with CAIR over the weekend.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — The Holy Month of Ramadan has begun and the Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, hosted a special event marking the beginning of the Holy Month of Ramadan with the presentation of Ramadan proclamations and messages of greetings from Gov. Larry Hogan’s office and Howard County Executive Calvin Ball.

“Ramadan is the holiest month of the year for the world’s nearly 2 billion Muslims, and we appreciate this special recognition by the governor and County Executive Ball,” CAIR’s Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry said. “We also extend our appreciation to all the elected officials who’ve acknowledged the significance of this time of year to our communities. This year’s Ramadan is extra special as it’s the first time in two years that most masajid are open again for communal prayers and worship as pandemic restrictions ease.”

Ramadan is the month on the Islamic lunar calendar during which Muslims abstain from food, drink and other pleasures from the break of dawn to sunset. The fast is performed to learn discipline, self-restraint and generosity, while obeying God’s commandments. Fasting (along with the declaration of faith, daily prayers, charity, and pilgrimage to Mecca) is one of the “five pillars” of Islam.
