COLUMBIA, MD — Howard County General Hospital celebrated the opening of its two-story, 50,000-square-foot expansion with a ribbon cutting Monday. The project features a new entrance and waiting area for the emergency department, and replaces observation and psychiatry units. The expansion also included more beds for the psychiatry unit, including additional private rooms, safety enhancements, patient amenities, modern treatment spaces and a new nurses’ station. The project cost approximately $45 million.

ā€œWe’re excited to open our new addition, which allows us to transition observation and psychiatric care from one of the oldest and most used buildings on campus into a brand new building that provides a healing environment and is equipped with the latest technology and furnishings. It will help us meet the needs of our rapidly growing and aging community,ā€ said Steve Snelgrove, president of Howard County General Hospital, in a statement.

ā€œHoward County General Hospital’s year-over-year increase in admissions was the highest of all of the 23 hospitals in the greater Baltimore region,ā€ said Howard County Executive Calvin Ball in a statement. ā€œThis expansion is critical to provide greater access to healthcare, more efficient services for our community, and ensure all our residents are healthy and thriving for years to come.ā€
