Increase In Distraction Thefts Reported By Howard Co. Police

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Residents are being warned of an outbreak of what's called distraction thefts that target older people in public parking lots.

The Howard County Police Department and nearby jurisdictions are receiving an increase in reports of these types of thefts that unfold in places like shopping and grocery store parking lots.

Also called a jewelry scam, suspects may approach their victims with friendly conversation—asking for directions, offering compliments or even placing “gifted” jewelry on them.

"During this interaction, they use quick, deceptive movements to steal valuables the victim is already wearing," the Howard County Police Department stated.

Detectives encourage community members to take the following precautions:

• Be aware of your surroundings, especially while wearing jewelry
• Do not engage with strangers who approach unexpectedly
• Remove any item placed on you and walk away
• Never allow anyone to touch or remove your personal property

Anyone who is approached and feels unsafe should contact police immediately via 911. Anyone who has been a victim of this crime but hasn't yet reported it is asked to call the police department's non-emergency line at 410-313-2200.
