Long Reach Falls To Frederick At State Basketball Championship

The Long Reach Lightning played in the MPSSAA girls basketball championship on Saturday, March 10.

TOWSON, MD — The Long Reach Lightning girls basketball team faced off against the Frederick Cadets Saturday night in the state championship. The class 3A basketball game, coordinated by the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA), was held at Towson University.

Despite a valiant effort, the Lightning could not snatch away the class 3A title from the defending champions, the Cadets.

After winning over the Lightning, 62-50, the Cadets are now the state title holders for the second consecutive year.

To get to championship game, Long Reach defeated Chesapeake, 77-58, in the state semifinals, and Frederick beat C. Milton Wright, 54-37. According to The Baltimore Sun, Long Reach's attainment of the regional title was a first for the school.

Heading into the state championship, Long Reach was 22-2 and Frederick was 25-2. The game started at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, at SECU Arena at Towson University. It ended before 10 p.m.

It was the third time the Cadets have earned a state title in the girls basketball playoffs, according to the MPSSAA.
